Recreate like the Joneses

Jeremy Jones, 42, is a snowboarding pioneer known for huge lines in Nepal, countless Alaskan first descents, and award-winning movies.

However, when he isn’t adding pages to his proverbial snowboarding résumé, he is at home in Truckee with his wife and two kids. Off the slopes, we chatted with Jones about what his family does in the winter when they aren’t snowboarding.

Keep in mind that while Jones is a professional athlete, the activities he suggests are meant to be inspiration for things you can do with your kids in Tahoe this winter.

Stand-Up Sledding

The Jones family’s favorite winter activity is something they call stand-up sledding. Take a kid’s snowboard or an old snowboard sans bindings (we know, not everyone has these lying around, but they can be found relatively cheap at local thrift stores), put surf wax on the bottom, and find a small hill to slide down. Ok, so this activity is pretty similar to snowboarding, but it doesn’t require pricey lift tickets. Jones’ pro tip: The pitch only needs to be 8 to 10 degrees, but the trick is finding a hill with a long run out.

Cross-Country Skiing

This is a classic Tahoe winter activity, but Jones has figured out the secret to cross-country skiing with kiddos — bring lots of treats. He explained that their family is pretty strict when it comes to junk food consumption, but when they are cross-country skiing (or backpacking) they take candy breaks every 20 minutes to keep up the morale.

Tahoe Art Haus & Cinema

Jones explained that it is a huge treat for their family to go to the Tahoe Art Haus for a movie. “It is like going to Disneyland for my kids,” he said. “The Art Haus is movies done in a Tahoe manner.” He loves that they keep their eyes out for truly unique movies.

The Classics

Just because he rides huge lines in foreign countries doesn’t mean Jeremy Jones doesn’t enjoy a good old-fashioned snowball fight. He said some of their favorite winter activities simply include snowball fights and building forts in their Truckee backyard. Another classic they enjoy is ice-skating under the lights at the Truckee circle rink.
